WHAT'S NEW IN NY?

CHANEL’S MOBILE ART EXHIBIT hits Central Park!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

All year long New York City welcomes a variety of public art displays and exhibits. New York City welcomes, Monday October 20, Karl Lagerfeld’s Mobile Art Exhibit honoring the 50 year anniversary of Chanel’s famous quilted handbag. Chanel’s Mobile Art Exhibit, designed by the renowned London architect Zaha Hadid, will stop in Rumsey Playfield in Central Park (midpark at 70st street). The Pavillon will be open to the public from October 20 to November 9.

The Mobile Art Pavilion has been inspired by one of Chanel?s signature creations, the quilted bag. Fifteen artists will display works inspired by the legendary accessory. Each one was asked to create a work that was at least in part inspired by Chanel?s classic 2.55 quilted-style chain handbag, so named because it was first issued in February 1955. It will round out the tour in Moscow, London and Paris.

Admission to the exhibition in Central Park will be free, although visitors are advised to book timed tickets at chanel-mobileart.com.

COLETTE Comes To New York

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

We knew that Colette closed on July 7th until August 25th for renovations. The new interior of the store is created by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall, whom you should know well by now for many recent Uniqlo stores.

Now here we are with a mini Colette opening in New York on September 6th until October 5th, a special one-month opening. The pop-up shop will be located next to the Gap flagship store on 54th Street near 5th Avenue. They will have a ton of collaborative product available just for the new location.

Last but not least they are promising a revamp of their website, which will mainly change the experience of online shopping and make it closer to their in-store experience.

I can’t wait to go to their opening!

ZARA: Largest clothing retail in the world

Saturday, August 23rd, 2008

Spanish fashion chain Zara has expanded so rapidly in recent months that it has overtaken its main US rival Gap to become the world’s largest clothing retailer. Beloved by proponents of fast-fashion, Zara has spread its reach across the world at a time when Gap has suffered from plummeting consumer spending in the US.
Zara’s parent company Inditex doesn’t spend much on advertising, but it does follow the sinister-sounding “oil stain” model of growth, following the opening of one big store in each new market with a number of smaller shops.

Zara is opening a store on 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue. This makes six Zara stores for Manhattan; their rival in the quest for world retail domination, the Gap, has twenty.

MUJI Comes To New York

Monday, August 18th, 2008

The area around the Port Authority Bus Terminal is about to get more sexy in the Fall. MUJI, the Japanese retailer known for its minimalist goods, announced that it will open its flagship American store in The New York Times building on 8th Ave between 40th and 41st Streets. Currently, MUJI only has two “stores” in the United States, both small sections at MoMA stores in New York. The company’s full name, Mujirushi Ryohin, translates to “No Brand Quality Goods”.

The president of Muji USA, Hiroysohi Azami is planning to open 20-30 U.S. stores. He believes the store will attract some tourists, but most shoppers will be New Yorkers.

For a sampling of what they sell, check out the MoMA store online or MUJI’s online store.

Two more APPLE STORES confirmed for New York City

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Apple is reporting that two new Apple Stores have been confirmed for The Big Apple. First, the borough of Brooklyn will host a store, either in the downtown area or in Williamsburg.

The location of the 2nd store is more certain. Earlier this week, it was all but confirmed that a store will be built at 23 Wall Street.

The bankers are going to be able to spend all their breaks to relax into the Apple stores, very smart Apple!
